About

Mezzo-soprano Sophie Kidwell is the 2024 winner of the Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition. She has been engaged at Theater Basel for the past two years, where she most recently (in April 2025) jumped in as Carmen (Carmen, Bizet) with the Basler Sinfonieorchester. She looks forward to singing the title role again in the closing performance in June. Praised in the German, Austrian and Swiss press for her “voluminous, velvety smooth and elegant voice”, distinguished by an "impressive usable range" and "sonorous lower register", Sophie has been described as "a name that opera fans should remember".

Sophie’s further roles at Theater Basel have included Maddalena (Rigoletto, Verdi), Alto Soloist (Requiem, Mozart), Flora (La Traviata, Verdi), Flosshilde (Das Rheingold, Wagner), Grimgerde (Die Walküre, Wagner), Flosshilde (Götterdämmerung, Wagner), Frédéric (Mignon, Thomas), among others.

Other career highlights include Carmen at the Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen, and in La Tragédie de Carmen at Landestheater Linz, as well as a jump-in as Pauline (La Vie Parisienne, Offenbach) at Stadttheater Bühnen Bern.

In the 2025/26 season Sophie looks forward to making her Italian debut in Palermo at Teatro Massimo, along with her role debut as Olga (Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky) at Theater Aachen, Maddalena (Rigoletto, Verdi) at Opéra de Lausanne, as well as the Mezzo solos in Dvorák’s Stabat Mater with the Berner Symphonieorchester.
